| BIOGRAPHY |
Hilma Colton was born in 1909 in Delta, California (in Shasta County). She graduated from the University of
California, Berkley, in 1931 and began her teaching career in a one room school in Wildwood, California. She
then taught in Davis for four years before coming to Elk Grove as an English and Girl's Physical Education
teacher at Elk Grove High School in 1941. She taught there until 1952, when she married Rowland Colton and
resigned to raise her three step children, Jon, Dana, and Sara. Her interest in education and involvement in
the community did not end there, however.
Mrs. Colton was active in the formation of the Community Services Organization, the forerunner for the Elk Grove
Community Foundation. (This organization helps students in need by offering educational scholarships.) She served
as President, and First Vice President, in the Cosumnes River College Patrons Club, which acts as a liaison
between the community and the college and raises funds for the college. She also served as Secretary of the Elk
Grove-Cosumnes District, was a Girl Scout leader and eventually the District Officer, was an Elk Grove Election
Board Committee Member for many years, was involved with the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and interviewed
students and prospective families for the American Field Services exchange student program.
Hilma Colton was honored as Elk Grove Citizen of the Year in 1967 and received the Los Rios Community College
Service Award in 1981.
