| BIOGRAPHY |
Bob Fite's engaging grin, limitless collection of wacky puns, boundless energy, and inability to say "no"
has made him a fixture at Elk Grove area community events. Bob grew up in southern California, earning a B.S. and
Master's degree at the University of Southern California. After serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a
demolition specialist in the Pacific, he began his lifelong career of working with children. He was a recreation
director for the county of Los Angeles and taught kindergarten through eighth grades in that area before moving to
Elk Grove in 1960 with his wife, Frances, whom he married in 1949. He and Frances had three children, Paul, Judith
and Cory, and seven grandchildren.
Bob served as an elementary school principal and was the first principal of the first middle school in the Elk
Grove Unified School District, Joseph Kerr. He had been a board member for the Sly Park Environmental Camping
Program and established the first EGUSD Adult Education program. He served for many years as president of the Elk
Grove Area Services Committee, providing food, clothing and Christmas baskets to local needy families. He was also
a 15 year member and former president of the Elk Grove Fireman's Association, volunteering hundreds of hours
responding to fire calls and medical emergencies.
Bob served on the boards of directors of Elk Grove Adult Community Training and the Elk Grove Community Advisory
Group of Los Flores High School. He also volunteered for Loaves and Fishes and as a Salvation Army coordinator
during the holiday season. Bob was named Elk Grove Citizen of the Year in 1970 and was honored as a Paul Harris
Fellow of the Rotary Club of Elk Grove, of which he is a charter member.
The activities closest to Bob's heart was probably centered around the Jessie Baker School for developmentally
challenged students. He coordinated the Rotary's Christmas Party there for 20 years, and participated in other major
school fund-raising efforts including building a therapeutic swimming pool. His dedication, compassion and respect
for students with mental retardation earned him the Community Service Award from the Sacramento Association for the
Retarded.
