BIOGRAPHY Ida Fleming grew up on a ranch off Bruceville Road. Her parents were immigrants from England and found work in the dairy industry. Ida attended Sacramento City College and majored in business. This led to a state job where she could type 70 words per minute -- in an age before computers (and spell check). Though she worked for the state, Ida's heart belonged to the community of Elk Grove. She volunteered much of her time to her church, Community Methodist. There she sang in the choir and arranged flowers for Sunday services and special occasions.

This love of flowers and gardens persuaded Fleming to help found the Garden Club of Elk Grove. She served as an active founding member and President. Many of her other contributions to the community were based on random acts of kindness to those less fortunate. Ida was the chair of Girl Scout Troop 96. She also chaired the Western Festival flower show for two years. She headed the PTA and Parents Club and used her talent for decorating to beautify local high school graduation ceremonies.

For all these reasons and more, Ida Fleming was selected as Elk Grove Citizen of the Year in 1968. Though now deceased, the Cosumnes CSD celebrated with Ida's surviving family her many contributions to the community and recognized her efforts during her life to make Elk Grove a better and more beautiful place to live by naming a park in her honor.
