| BIOGRAPHY |
Born in 1887, Guy Foulks was an integral part of the growth and development of Elk Grove in the first
half of this century. He was born on Foulks Ranch and raised by his father after his mother died when
he was very young. When he graduated from Elk Grove Union High School he was one of only 5 students in
his graduating class. Elizabeth Graham was the only girl in that class, and he married her 5 years later.
They had 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
He enthusiastically involved himself in the ranch and the community. He was a member of the Native Sons
of the Golden West for 50 years, serving as President and Governor General of Past Presidents. In 1915,
he started the first State Oratorical Contest on "California History". It was such a popular
contest it has been continued to the present day. In the early 1920's, Mr. Foulks served on the first
Board of Trustees when the four smaller school districts - Victory, San Joaquin, Jackson, and Old Elk
Grove, joined into one. He was an active member of the Lions Club, Elk Grove Park Board Member from
1936-1954, member of the Elk Grove Winery and Elk Grove Fruit Growers Association Boards. He also played
on Elk Grove's semi-pro baseball team.
In the early 1920's, he and his wife began the "Valley Investment Company" (one of the first finance
companies in Sacramento County) with $400 that she had saved for emergencies. They began by financing radios
and sewing machines and soon after were financing cars. In 1922 Guy sold insurance for Hartford Fire Insurance
Agency. In 1935, they purchased the Oldsmobile agency in Sacramento and operated it as the Foulks Motor Company.
