Through the years, Mary Lewis has been a steady contributor to the progression of Elk Grove. Mary's
involvement in various community activities have helped shape the community Elk Grove has become today.
Mary, originally a native of New Jersey, is best known around town as a staff writer for the Elk Grove
Citizen. Mary's journalism career began at the University of Missouri at Columbia. While at the
University of Missouri, Mary earned a bachelor of journalism (B.J.). Upon graduation, Mary worked at an
advertising agency in Philadelphia and married Roy Herburger. She spent 3 years as an Air Force wife and
then came to California. Mary's first job in California was working for the River News Herald in Rio Vista
for a year and a half. After leaving Rio Vista, Roy and Mary bought the Elk Grove Citizen and the Galt
Herald in 1959 and she has been working for the Elk Grove Citizen ever since.
Mary has been extremely active in community activities since her arrival in Elk Grove. She has served as a
member of EGCPAC, a community planning advisory council, and served as secretary for the council. She also
was involved with the Elk Grove Republican Women and served as secretary and treasurer. Mary is a charter
member and current member of Soroptomist International of Rio Cosumnes and has served as a director and
publicity chairperson. She is a past member of the Citizen of the Year committee and served as a member of
the Sacramento County Grand Jury for 1989 - 1990. She is a member of the Senior Center of Elk Grove and
serves on the Board of Directors as secretary, as well as secretary of the board for the Strauss Festival
and new member of the board of directors for the California Press Association.
The Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce has played a large role in Mary's life over the years. She was a member
of the Board of Directors in 1983 - 1986 and again from 1995 - 1997. She is a past chairperson of business
mixers and is a former editor of the business directory. She served as a member of the Red, White, and Blue
committee from 1997 - 2000 and currently sits on the Ambassador committee, a committee she has been dedicated
to since 1995. Mary is a faithful member of the Galt United Methodist Church and has served as financial
secretary for the church. She is a current member of the choir as well.
Mary and Roy were honored by the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce in 1979 as the Chamber Service Award, the first
award of its kind given by the Chamber. They also received the award again in 2004 in celebration of the 25th
anniversary of the award. Mary is married to Dr. Arnold Lewis - a retired Methodist minister - and is the mother
of two children: Beth Swartz, event planner for Sun Microsystems, and David Herburger, general manager and
publisher of the Elk Grove Citizen. She is the proud grandmother of five grandchildren - Daniel, Tom and Laura
Herburger, and Kathy and Andrew Swartz.
