| BIOGRAPHY |
Judge Godfrey F. Mix, Jr. was born in 1897 at Mills Station where the Mather Field housing unit now stands.
In 1902, his family moved to Elk Grove where his father established a farm. Judge Mix attended local schools
and graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1916. He farmed with his father for a few years before establishing
a dairy and later a fruit ranch of his own. In 1922, he met Marion Beatrice Smith, an Elk Grove school teacher.
Judge Mix and Marion began a courtship that led to marriage and eventually one child, Oscar, and two
grandchildren, Jackie and Lori.
In 1929 he was named Deputy County Assessor, covering the Elk Grove, Florin, and Wilton areas. He served in that
capacity until 1942 when he was appointed as Judge of the Elk Grove Court. In 1953 the Galt and Elk Grove Courts
combined to form the Elk Grove-Galt Judicial District. Judge Godfrey F. Mix served as Judge of the new district
until he retired from the bench in 1964. In addition to serving as Judge for the area, Judge Mix was active in the
Elk Grove community. He promoted the reactivation of Boy Scout Troop #59 and was involved in scouting for ten years,
including serving as a District Community Member. He was also active in the formation of the Elk Grove Chamber of
Commerce and in the local Fruitgrowers Association. The area of involvement perhaps closest to Judge Mix was the
local Masonic Lodge. He was a member for 57 years and held many offices including Master in 1934. In 1981 Judge Mix
received the Hiram Award, the highest honor given for outstanding lodge and community involvement, as well as for
civic accomplishments.
Judge Mix's hobbies included stamp collecting and lapidary work (the collecting and polishing of rocks), which
encouraged his involvement as President of the Sacramento Mineral Society. Judge Mix died in 1983. His family still
lives in the Elk Grove community.
