BIOGRAPHY In 1921, Jacob and Fredricka Schauer moved to Elk Grove with their 9 children where they worked in the area's vineyards and farms. Jacob's son, Fred Schauer, purchased and worked a dairy farm located on the corner of Bilby and Bruceville Road. Fred's dairy farm was just a few short miles from the Schauer park site. Fred sold his farm in 1947 and he and his two brothers, Chris and Gottlieb, established a small grocery store on Elk Grove Boulevard that was called the 'Elk Grove Drive-In Market.' In 1953, they built a new modern grocery store called 'EG Food Mart.' The families worked in the store until they sold it in 1970. Fred and wife Frieda had two sons named Mel and Jim. In 1960, Mel and wife Evy opened an A&W restaurant in the heart of Elk Grove. Jim and wife Marsha took over the A&W in 1970 and ran the business until 1984. In 1974, Mel and Jim opened a new restaurant called 'Parkway Drive-In' with Mel's "Herd" burgers and soft-served ice cream cones. Mel built 'Parkway Car Wash' in 1974 and operated both the carwash and drive-in until he retired in 1993. In addition to the businesses the Schauer Family operated, they also proudly served Elk Grove as school teachers and church and community leaders.
