| BIOGRAPHY |
If an interest to serve one's community is hereditary, then David Simpson was destined to lend a hand. With
nearly 30 years of service to the Elk Grove community, he has become an important contributor to a wide variety
of organizations and causes in the Elk Grove community. David's family has a long history of community involvement.
In 1900, one of his Great-Grandfathers was the Master of the Petaluma Masonic Lodge. His grandfather was a City
Councilman in Woodland in the early 1900's, and his mother, Claudia Hanson Simpson, was active with the Camellia
Society, Soroptimists, Tuesday Club, and the "Community Chest" Drive -- the precursor to United Way. In
the late forties, Claudia was recognized as Sacramento's "Mother of the Year."
David spent four years serving America, most of that time onboard the U.S.S. Charles F. Adams, a guided missile
destroyer. Upon discharge, he started a career with the State of California where he met, fell in love with, and
married Ginger. While balancing college, work, and raising a family, David also found time to volunteer with the
Y.M.C.A, teaching bowling to the visually impaired through the Sacramento Society of the Blind.
David and Ginger moved to Elk Grove in 1975 and he immediately got involved with community activities by first
becoming the charter President of the reorganized Jaycee program. Since then, he has served as a member of Rotary,
Optimists, and Toastmasters. He has also served on the Boards of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Home Field
Advantage, and as President of the Senior Center of Elk Grove. He serves on the Boards of the Elk Grove Community
Food Bank Services, the Western Festival, Elk Grove Lions Club, and the Senior Center of Elk Grove. He and Ginger
continue to deliver lunches every week as a part of the "Meals on Wheels" program managed by the Senior Center.
For the past fifteen years David has been writing a weekly column under the banner of "Once Around the Barber
Pole" for the Elk Grove Citizen. Using this column David not only promotes individuals, groups and organizations
around town, but he tries to promote the Elk Grove community as the finest place to live and raise families. His
involvement in Elk Grove culminated in him being named "Citizen of the Year" in 1995.
