Lesson Levels:

Turtle (infant/pre-school with parent)
Age: 6 months and up
Water adjustment and safety skills for parent and child. This class is not designed to teach the toddler to swim independently, but to increase the comfort level of children in and around the water. Class sessions are the first 4 days of each session. (There must be one parent/adult per one child.)

Starfish (level 1) Water Exploration
Age: 3 years + (and 32" or taller)
For children who do not yet go underwater. Child learns to submerge face independently and is introduced to floating and locomotion in the water in a fun and supportive environment.

Seahorse (level 2) Primary Skills
(32" or taller)
Child must be able to submerge face independently. Child learns to float on front and back and swim on front and back for a short distance.

Minnow (level 3) Stroke Readiness
Child must be able to swim and float independently on front and back. Child refines front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl. They are introduced to elementary backstroke and treading water.

Otter (level 4) Stroke Development
Child must swim front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke for 15 yards independently in water that may be over their head. They will refine front crawl with rotary breathing, back crawl, and elementary backstroke and will learn sidestroke, breaststroke and flip turns.

Dolphin (level 5) Stroke Refinement
Child must be able to swim at least 25 yeards of front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke in deep water. Breastroke is refined and butterfly is learned. They will also practice treading water with different kicks and flip turns.

Shark (level 6) Advanced Skill Proficiency
Child must be able to swim at least 50 yards of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, and elementary backstorke. Endurance and technique are emphasized and butterfly is refined.

Private Lessons (Age 5+)
For the personal touch , take a private lesson. Students of all swimming abilities will receive one-on-one instruction at their own level with an experience instructor. Sessions are 4-days long.

Adult Lessons (Age 14+)
It's never too late to learn to swim. Join us in a group setting as adults learn at their own pace. Instructors will modify the class to best meet the students' needs.

Swim Lessons "Adapted" (Age 5+)
Our adapted swim lesson program is designed for children and adults with disabilities. Participants will receive one-on-one instruction at their own level with an experienced instructor. For more information, call Timory Desalernos at 405-5667.

Helpful Hints for Cosumnes CSD Swim Lessons:

  • It is recommended that children repeat the last level they completed the previous summer.
  • Most children remain in the same level for two or more sessions.
  • Please have a second and third choice ready when registering, as classes fill up quickly.
  • Remember that both the Jerry Fox Swim Center and Wackford Community and Aquatic Complex offer swim lessons, so if a class is full at one pool, check the other facility.
  • Please make sure your child has a swim suit, towel and plenty of sun block! For children in diapers, swim diapers must be worn in the pool (available for purchase at the front desk of the aquatic complex). Goggles and swim caps can be worn as well.
  • Be on time or early to class!

Refund Policy: Refunds will be granted if cancellations are received 72 hours prior to the first class. Failure to attend a program or "no shows" will not be granted refunds or credits.

Waitlist policy: Anyone can waitlist at anytime for individual classes. Waitlists are not rolled over from year to year, session to session, or class to class. It is the responsibility of the parent to place their child(ren) on the appropriate waitlist(s). If a client withdraws from a class thus creating an open spot, the first person on the waitlist is called and has 24 hrs from the time the call was placed to accept or decline.

Please call (916) 405-5600 for more information and registration.
